Samsung tools aim to help its smart devices stand out

Samsung has unveiled a raft of new software tools to help developers create apps specifically designed for its devices.
The South Korean firm is releasing five new software development kits (SDKs).
It said they would make it easier to create programs that can share content on its phones, tablets and TVs.
The company announced the news in San Francisco at its first developer conference. It is already the best-selling Android device manufacturer.
Samsung wants to defend that position by ensuring new software takes advantage of its devices' proprietary features, such as support for its S Pen stylus and its Multi Window function, which allows two apps to be run in split-screen mode.
"Consumers want the best possible experience," Samsung senior vice-president Curtis Sasaki told the BBC.

The Google Chromecast

The Google Chromecast is a dirt-cheap wireless video dongle that streams Netflix and YouTube to your TV using Android or iOS tablets as remotes, with Android users also getting access to Google Music and Google TV and Movies. Its small size hides neatly behind your TV and makes it easy to take on-the-go.

PS4 confirmed to ship with easily replaceable 2.5-inch hard drive

Early on, Sony made it clear that users would have physical access to the 500GB hard drive in the PS4, but the exact details surrounding the process were slim. Now, we have a hands-on confirmation that anyone with the will and a screwdriver can replace the drive inside of Sony’s next console. Too bad a 500GB SSD will cost just about as much as the PS4 itself.

Samsung reportedly close to releasing Glass competitor — and Google’s involved.

This one is definitely a rumor, but its source is reliable enough to warrant a little speculation. Analyst and blogger Eldar tweeted a rather definite message this week that Samsung is “developing [its] own version of Google Glass. We will see it (probably) around April – May under Gear Glass brand.” Given that Google’s own version of Glass is not expected to hit the mass market until early 2014, Samsung’s Glass competitor could very well race Google’s to market.

LG is making ‘bendable and unbreakable’ OLED display, for useless curved smartphone.....

LG has confirmed that it has begun mass production of a flexible, 6-inch OLED display for smartphones. According to LG, these displays are both bendable and unbreakable (if LG would like to send us a prototype so that we can test the latter claim, that’d be lovely).

Windows 9 will unify the smartphone, tablet, desktop, and console, but is it too little too late?

Next week, on October 18, Microsoft will release Windows 8.1, a fairly large update that Microsoft hopes will finally give it relevance in the tablet space, and at the same time make Windows 8 less abhorrent for desktop and laptop users.
